About Dean Spiros

Dean Spiros has over 30 years of daily newspaper experience while working as a writer and editor in Chicago and Minneapolis. He currently lives in the Twin Cities, where he works as a freelance writer and editor.

The native of Oak Park, Illinois, developed a passion for sports at a young age. Committed to playing whichever sport was in season, he admits to naively wondering at the age of 12 how he was ever going to decide which sport he was going to play professionally. Reality set in when his football and baseball days ended after high school, but he continues to enjoy fitness training and weightlifting.

With his attention turned to a career as a sports writer, he earned a degree in journalism from the University of Memphis. He landed his first job in Chicago shortly after graduation and established himself as one of the most respected sports journalists in one of the country's largest media markets. Career highlights include covering Michael Jordan and his six NBA championships, golf's U.S. Open, PGA Championship and The Masters, and serving as a beat writer covering the Chicago Blackhawks and the NHL.

Upon his move to Minnesota, his focus became writing about college sports, including University of Minnesota baseball and hockey. His time at the Minneapolis Star Tribune also included a stint as sports section coordinator, which involved the planning and production of the daily sports section.
